So I recently came up with a hack to make Adjustable Spreader Bars even more versatile.
This came about because I was tossing around the idea of getting a metal yoke… but didn’t really want the extra expense, nor the need to store one. That’s when I looked a little more closely at my Adjustable Spreader Bars, bought from The Stockroom, which is based here in LA! I’d gather you can get similar from a variety of places.
In short, I realized the hooks at the end unscrew! And that if I found just the right screw, I could possibly thread two bars together at right angles. And that’s exactly what I did!
It did take a bit of trial and error to find the correct size and length screw, so depending on what you get, you may have to try a few screws out. (I just brought one end of the bar with me into the store to test it out, no need to bring the whole bar.)
As it turned out for my particular brand, it was a 10mm metric screw (obviously other brands may differ). To make it more secure, I also splurged for a metric wrench. They’re usually only sold in sets, but if you scour a few hardware stores, you may be able to find them sold independently.
Because the ends are flat, and they’re being tightened to something round, it’s not 100% tight. It does wriggle and sway a bit. But it’s certainly enough to get some interesting uses out of it, as you can see from the sample pics at the end where I bolted four different bars together into a makeshift yoke. Enjoy!
