I ran across this pic online, and it totally reminded me of a lost a restaurant. It was called Tallywhackers, and it was basically a male version of Hooters. Yes, it really existed… and I visited it!

It only lasted a year in a gay-friendly neighborhood of Dallas, Texas in 2015. I didn’t travel just for it, I was in the area already for other business. I was alone on this particular trip, so it was a bit awkward, but I knew I had to try it.

Sadly, I don’t have any pictures from it… I seem to remember I may have been to shy to try to take them. I went during a pretty dead time in the middle of the day, and I have a memory of it being fairly quiet. Although I was also surprised to see the name of a lounge singer as someone I used to work with in Los Angeles (unfortunately, he was not performing the day I was there).

I was also a bit disappointed to hear that due to health codes, the servers couldn’t go shirtless until much later in the night, when it was more of a bar. I seem to recall the food being okay, but I think we can all agree the food wasn’t the main reason for visiting.

If you want to know more about this place, there’s a SFW article here. But it always has been fairly surprising to me that someone else hasn’t tried to make a concept similar to this work.

Still, even though it wasn’t quite what I was expecting (or perhaps ready for at that point in my life), I’m glad I was able to visit it once in it’s short-lived time.
